Michelin will release a restaurant guide for Chicago this fall, Jean-Luc Naret, the guide books' worldwide director, said this week.
Michelin arrived in Chicago two years ago to begin inspecting the Windy City's restaurants and hotels. The 2011 Chicago Michelin Guide will debut in November, Naret said.
Guides of other U.S. cities besides the two already being rated — New York and San Francisco — will be released in the future, Naret said. But one comprehensive U.S. guide isn’t in the stars because it would take too many reviewers and too long to compile, he explained.
In addition to wanting a presence in the Midwest, Michelin selected Chicago for a guide book because “we noticed chefs who are doing incredible molecular cuisine and chefs who are providing very local [foods] for very good values,” he said. Such diversity is “what we’re all about."
“And it’s really a restaurant city,” Naret added. “The people [in Chicago] are fanatical about restaurants of all kinds.”
Andre and Edouard Michelin, founders of the Michelin tire company, began publishing travel guides in 1900. Today, the company has 25 guides in 23 countries.
