The Greene Turtle revamps menu

Regional casual-dining chain also lowers prices on some items

The Greene Turtle, a 28-unit casual-dining chain based in Edgewater, Md., has lowered some prices and added combination platters as part of its annual menu revamp.

Chief executive Mike Sanford said lower prices from his supplier have allowed him to take 20 cents off of the price of the chain’s cheeseburger, which is now $7.79, and 50 cents off of its bacon cheeseburger, lowering it to $8.49.

“We still find that our customers, I guess like most of them in the casual-dining segment, are looking for value," he said, noting that Greene Turtle's average per-person check is $14.62.

Also new to the menu are three combination platters. The fish and popcorn shrimp platter with fries and slaw is $11.99; the barbecue rib and chicken platter with fries and slaw is $13.99; and the “Steak & Cake” platter, featuring flat iron steak and crab cakes served with fries and steamed broccoli, is $19.49.

Sanford said the combination platters, a first for the Greene Turtle, are in response to customers who wanted to try multiple items.

Some of the new items on the Greene Turtle’s new menu were tested as limited-time offers in previous years, including the $7.99 pulled pork sliders and the $16.99 baby back ribs.

The Crabby Melt — a grilled cheese sandwich with crab dip, tomato and bacon on sourdough bread — was tested last year and is now on the menu for $8.99.

Also new to the menu is the “Ultimate Ahi” appetizer. That $9.99 item features seared and blackened ahi tuna, served rare over Asian slaw and a side of cucumber-wasabi sauce.

The new Feta Bruschetta, $5.99, features spicy feta and shredded Parmesan on toast points, topped with diced tomato.

The Greene Turtle has restaurants in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated The Greene Turtle's per-person check average. The chain's average check is $14.62.
