Applebee’s adds to Weight Watchers menu

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar has added three items to its Weight Watchers Menu in a drive to appeal to nutrition-conscious customers.

The Weight Watchers lineup now has five items with the debut of the chipotle-lime chicken, a steak and potato salad, and spicy pineapple-glazed shrimp and spinach, the casual-dining chain said Monday.

The chipotle-lime chicken includes a grilled chicken breast topped with chipotle-lime salsa, served with Southwest rice, black bean and corn slaw with cilantro-tossed citrus vinaigrette. It’s 13 points on Weight Watchers’ recently revised Points Plus program.

The 9-point steak and potato salad is made with spinach, red peppers, onions, tomatoes and basil with creamy Dijon vinaigrette topped with hard-boiled eggs and grilled steak. That’s served with herb-steamed potatoes.

The 8-point shrimp and spinach dish consists of two pineapple-glazed skewers of grilled shrimp served on white rice, with a side of spinach salad with black bean and corn salsa and diced cucumbers.

Applebee’s additions to it Weight Watchers menu, which first debuted in 2004, follows the chain’s expansion of its Under 550 Calories menu with two items.

Earlier this month, the chain added a teriyaki pasta, which features shrimp or chicken along with broccoli, red peppers, carrots, sugar snap peas, bok choy, water chestnuts and mushrooms accompanying whole-wheat Asian noodles in s teriyaki sauce with cilantro.

The new Signature Sirloin with garlic herb shrimp features a 7-ounce steak with shrimp in a light cream sauce. It’s served with herb potatoes, vegetables, bruschetta, sliced almonds and chopped parsley.

Lenexa, Kan.-based Applebee’s has 2,000 restaurants and is a division of DineEquity Inc.
