Jamba to slow store openings, cut jobs

EMERYVILLE, Calif. (May 15, 2008) Jamba Inc., operator or franchisor of 726 Jamba Juice locations, said late Thursday that it would close 10 underperforming stores and terminate the leases on seven planned openings. The smoothie specialist also said it would eliminate 53 positions within its corporate support functions.

Dunkin' pledges $1M to CIA
Dunkin’ Brands Inc., parent of the Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins quick-service chains, Wednesday pledged $1 million to become a founding donor of the Culinary Institute of America’s “El Sueno,” or The Dream, initiative. The donation, which will be paid over five years beginning in 2009, will support the construction of baking and pastry kitchens at the college’s main campus in Hyde Park, N.Y., and new campus in San Antonio. The CIA has set a goal of elevating the profile of Latin American food.

Ga. legalizes weapons possession in all restaurants
Despite the objections of Georgia’s restaurant industry, Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a bill into law Wednesday that allows residents with concealed-weapons permits to bring their guns into restaurants that serve alcohol.

Jack in the Box fails to dodge the slowdown
Jack in the Box Inc. reported Wednesday a 3-percent drop in its second quarter profit and cited the same challenges plaguing almost all restaurant companies: higher costs and slowing sales.

Foie gras ban overturned in Chicago
The Chicago City Council on Wednesday repealed its ban on the sale of foie gras at restaurants and elsewhere in the city. By a vote of 37-6, the council overturned the ban, which had received worldwide ridicule in food circles.

Like most talented chefs, Darren Weiss toiled away in others’ kitchens for years before opening his own spot, Café Catalina in Redondo Beach, Calif., in 2000. The restaurant was a humble one in a strip center with an upstairs kitchen from which he and a pair of servers fed 10 tables. As the chef-owner, the pressure was always on, but he loved being in charge.
