Industry’S Shortage of Female Corporate Leaders Persists

NEW YORK —The hospitality industry can boast more female corporate officers and board directors than most Fortune 500 companies—but the lead is small, according to a recent report by Catalyst, a research and advisory organization here that promotes the advancement of women in business.

The 2006 Census of Women Corporate Officers, Top Earners and Directors of the Fortune 500 revealed a persistent shortage of women in corporate leadership positions across all industries, including foodservice and hotels. Women accounted for 15.6 percent of corporate positions at companies that make Fortune magazine’s list of top 500 companies. By comparison, women accounted for 20.6 percent of corporate officers in foodservice and accommodations. —The hospitality industry can boast more female corporate officers and board directors than most Fortune 500 companies—but the lead is small, according to a recent report by Catalyst, a research and advisory organization here that promotes the advancement of women in business.
