Bankrupt Sam Seltzer's shutters three stores

TAMPA Fla. Sam Seltzer’s Steakhouses of America Inc. closed three of its nine restaurants last week as part of its recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, said a company spokeswoman.

Tammie Atkinson, director of marketing for the regional steakhouse chain, said that the remaining six core restaurants are strong and profitable and will stay open.

Employees of the shuttered restaurants in Brandon, Port Charlotte and Altamonte Springs, Fla., were not notified ahead of time, Atkinson said. She was unsure of how many employees were let go in the closures.

“Some we were able to relocate, and we did work very hard to place those we could,” she said.

Sam Seltzer’s filed for bankruptcy protection in June and obtained a $1 million credit line to support it during its restructuring. The operator said in filings that it was forced to seek protection from creditors because of debt from a previous expansion and the consumer fallout from weak economic conditions and the rise in fuel costs.

Sam Seltzer's was founded here in 1995.
