BRAWLEY, Calif. (Nov. 24, 2009) Concern about possible salmonella contamination has prompted a recall of cantaloupes under the Majesty label sold nationwide to foodservice, wholesale and retail operations.

All cartons of the melons in question carry the Majesty label and have lot numbers 198 2 or 198 3 and “packed on” dates of Nov. 4, Nov. 6 or Nov. 10, according to the supplier, Five Crowns Marketing of Brawley. Some melons have individual Majesty labels, but some do not have labels.

The melons were shipped to wholesalers, retailers, and foodservice operators in Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, the supplier said.

No illnesses linked to the cantaloupes have been reported, Five Crowns said in a statement released Nov. 20 through the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Five Crowns said the recall was prompted by a positive finding for salmonella returned by a test of a lot sample. To be cautious, it recalled all melons from that lot.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
