Yum airs plans for Indian growth push

LOUISVILLE Ky. Yum! Brands Inc., which oversees about 130 Pizza Hut and 30 KFC outlets in India, expects to add between 30 and 40 restaurants there during each of the next three years, according to a published estimate from Niren Chaudhary, managing director for Yum in India.

Yum, which has adjusted menu items and service styles in India to suit local tastes and traditions, already has locations in 32 cities there.

Some Pizza Hut menu items unique to India are tandoori and masala pizza and a line of vegetarian dishes. A survey conducted by Economic Times magazine has named Pizza Hut as India’s most-trusted quick-service restaurant brand for the past three years.

Executives have credited growth in Yum’s international and China divisions as chiefly responsible for the company’s revenue and profit growth. Systemwide sales were up about 12 percent in Asia in the second quarter, said David Novak, chief executive of Yum.

Pizza Hut recently launched its first television advertising campaign in India.
