Yard House debuts streamlined grill concept

CHINO HILLS Calif. Yard House Restaurants on Sunday opened a smaller and more streamlined “little sister” bar-and-grill variant to its namesake brand.

Called Yard House Bar & Grill, the test unit opened in Chino Hills, Calif., a Los Angeles suburb. Company officials predict first-year sales for the 6,500-square-foot restaurant will reach $4.8 million.

While the “big sister” Yard House restaurants typically feature more than 100 menu items and 100 to 250 beers on tap, the smaller bar and grill will have about 65 of the most popular menu items and about 50 taps at the bar. Both brands feature a full bar with wine and liquor.

“Unlike Yard House, which is more of a destination restaurant because of its sheer size and, often times, location, Yard House Bar & Grill caters to smaller communities and is in essence part of the neighborhood landscape,” said Steele Platt, Yard House founder and chief executive.

Platt said that if the Chino Hills location is successful, the company may roll out other units of the concept in smaller markets.

Based in Irvine, Calif., Yard House operates 20 restaurants, including the new bar-and-grill test unit.
