Wal-Mart touts its value as a pizza option

BENTONVILLE Ark. Wal-Mart is trying to lure consumers away from pizza chains by promoting its Sam’s Choice Take and Bake Pizza as a better value.

During a15-second TV spot that aired during the recently concluded Olympic Games, the retailer claimed that a family that eats pizza once a week can save $312 a year by buying a Wal-Mart pizza instead of ordering a pie from quick-service chains and pizzerias.

The ad says ordering a pizza usually costs $14, but the Wal-Mart pizza costs only $8. The nation’s largest retailer based the price comparison on a study The NPD Group conducted in July. According to Wal-Mart, the $14 price is the mean price per pizza when pizzas are ordered from a fast-food restaurant or pizzeria.
