Tax time brings slew of deals

TAMPA Fla. Restaurants are offering discounts and freebies as Americans scramble to file their tax returns today.

In Florida, 188 McDonald's restaurants in the Tampa Bay area are offering a Big Mac or a Quarter Pounder for a penny with the purchase of one of the sandwiches at the regular price. The promotion runs through midnight Ñ the deadline for tax returns.

Papa John's has brought back its "1040" discount pizza deal for the third year in a row. Customers who order online can enter the 1040 promotional code to get a large, three-topping pizza for $10.40. The deal lasts through Thursday, according to the pizza chain's website. In addition, Papa John's said it would offer free pizza to workers and customers at local post offices across the country.

Other chains are offering items for free on Tax Day, such as Dunkin' Donuts, which is giving away a doughnut with each coffee purchase. And Chipotle customers who purchased a burrito on Monday or Tuesday reportedly can redeem their receipt for a free burrito on Wednesday.

Bennigan's Grill & Tavern is using tax time to launch its Cash Crunch Lunch program. Through June 16, the casual chain is offering lunch and drink combos that start at $4.99. The lunch options feature the chain's classic items, such as its burger or Monte Cristo sandwich, as well as newer items, like its KilkennyÕs grilled chicken salad. Drink selections include soft drinks, tea, coffee or bottled water.
