Steak n Shake adds Lighter Choices options to menu

INDIANAPOLIS Steak n Shake, most noted for its signature Steakburgers and hand-dipped milk shakes, is this month adding to its menu a line of options called Lighter Choices intended to appeal to customers in search of less-filling food items, officials of the 490-unit full-service chain said Wednesday.

Two new entrée salads, the Apple Walnut Grilled Chicken and Classic Grilled Chicken salads, will join updated versions of the chain’s existing Beef or Grilled Chicken Taco, Fried Chicken and Deluxe Garden salads on July 16.  All salads include a romaine lettuce blend and toppings such as grape tomatoes, dried cranberries, Granny Smith apples, honey-roasted walnuts, ranch pecans and croutons.

In addition, two new Fruit ‘n Frozen Yogurt Milk Shakes will be available in peach and black cherry flavors, along with improved side salads, and apples and grapes, which may also be substituted for fries in junior meals, officials said.

The creation of the Lighter Choices line began about two years ago and menus now contain green “lighter” symbols next to more than a dozen items, said Seven Schiller, Steak n Shake’s chief marketing officer. Updated nutritional information showing trans fat and sugar content will be added to the website’s nutrition charts this August, he added. The chain converted its frying oil to a trans-fat-free blend at the end of May.

The launch of the Lighter Choices options and salads will be supported by television, magazine ads and couponing in most markets in the 20 states in which Steak n Shake operates, starting July 23.
