Starbucks to launch iTunes partnership with 50M-song giveaway

SEATTLE Starbucks is expecting to give away more than 50 million songs in a promotion marking the Oct. 2 launch of the coffeehouse chain’s iTunes Wi-Fi Music Stores in more than 600 units in New York and Seattle.

In a partnership with Apple Inc., Starbucks customers will be able to use the T-Mobile HotSpot Wi-Fi Network to download music onto their iPhones, iPod Touch devices or laptops from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store with no connection fees.

From Oct. 2 to Nov. 7, customers at more than 10,000 Starbucks locations can receive "Song of the Day" cards redeemable for a free song selected by Starbucks Entertainment on iTunes. The songs will include music by such artists as Bob Dylan, Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, Bebel Gilberto, John Mayer, K.T. Tunstall, John Legend, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell and more.

The chain also will introduce a new "Now Playing" feature that allows customers using iTunes in the stores to preview, buy and download the music playing in the stores at the time.

After the rollout in New York and Seattle, the program will be brought to participating Starbucks locations in the San Francisco Bay area in November. The rollout will continue to Los Angeles in February 2008, Chicago in March 2008 and other markets later next year.

Seattle-based Starbucks operates or licenses about 14,400 namesake coffeehouses worldwide.
