Starbucks, iTunes harmonize in new weekly music promotion

SEATTLE Starbucks will offer customers free music and video downloads weekly through a new program with iTunes at the chain’s more than 7,000 U.S. coffeehouse locations, officials announced Tuesday.

Through the Pick of the Week program, customers will receive a download card redeemable at the iTunes Store for a complimentary song or music video picked by the Starbucks Entertainment team and iTunes. This week’s artist is the Counting Crows with the new song “Washington Square.”

Last year, Starbucks and iTunes offered a Song of the Day program with free downloads for one month. More than 6 million songs were downloaded.

In 2006, Starbucks began testing iTunes Wi-Fi Music Stores at select locations in New York, Seattle and San Francisco, allowing customers to wirelessly download music with no connection fees or hotspot login. The Now Playing feature allows customers to preview, buy and download the music playing in the Starbucks location at the time. Officials are planning a national rollout of the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store service.
