Quiznos revs up delivery service

DENVER The 4,000-plus-unit Quiznos sandwich chain is gearing up for a big promotion next year of delivery service, which the brand has quietly rolled out to almost half of its system.

As many as 1,500 franchised Quiznos branches now offer delivery on orders of $8 or more for a $2 fee, said Rebecca Steinfort, the Denver-based chain's senior vice president of delivery and catering. Another 400 locations are expected to add the service over the next two months.

Quiznos last summer gave franchisees the option to offer delivery, which can be requested by phone or online at Quiznos.com. Apart from in-store promos, delivery so far has been pitched only on the chain's website and to customers who've signed up to receive e-mail notices.

With the price of gasoline averaging more than $4 a gallon, the delivery service is resonating with consumers who are curtailing their driving, she said.

"We've seen a great response even though we have not been advertising," Steinfort said. "We will start doing much more of that in 2009."

Rival chain Subway is testing delivery in limited areas of New York and Boston. Jimmy John's, which has delivered sandwiches since the chain's 1983 inception, has grown to nearly 700 branches in some 35 states.
