 Digital Production Requirements

  • Digital advertising is submitted by the advertiser and accepted by Nation’s Restaurant News with the agreement that the material will perform satisfactorily with no intervention required on the part of Nation’s Restaurant News. If supplied digital advertising materials do not meet the criteria required or require intervention or handwork to prepare material for press, the advertiser will be billed for all costs incurred.
  • Files may be furnished as: PDF/X-1a files (Embed all fonts and graphics), EPS, TIFF, inDesign, and QuarkXPress files. Applications created with other software may also be accepted. (Please contact manufacturing to confirm that we accept your other programs.) We prefer Macintosh platform application files. If you are on Windows platform, please save finished application file as a high resolution PDF file with fonts and graphics embedded.
  • Media: Please send files on a CD. Label the CD with customer’s name/ publication name and issue. Include a printout of the CD’s contents and a SWOP color proof.
  • Fonts: We prefer Adobe Post Script 1 fonts (printer and screen). No Multiple Master Fonts. Never use Type Styles for Bold and/or Italic attributes. Always choose the actual Bold or Italic font family (Type Styled attributes will not print).
  • Programs: Adobe Illustrator files must be saved as EPS files. To avoid font conflicts, please convert ALL fonts to Outlines or Paths. Flatten all layers and transparencies.
  • Adobe PhotoShop files must be saved as EPS or TIFF files. No PSD or JPEG files. Flatten all files.
  • Color: All 4-color must be CMYK. No ICC profiles. If there is a Pantone or 5th color, arrangements must be made with the Nation’s Restaurant News production staff.
  • Page Setup: Application files must be constructed so that upon opening the file, all elements (fonts, graphics, etc.) are positioned correctly. The customer must supply all related files necessary for output. It is suggested that you use the "collect for output" function prior to sending files. Only include files that are needed to output your work.
  • Safety Margin: Keep live type safety margin 3/8" from the trim.
  • Bleeds: Full bleed is accepted on all full page ads at no additional charge. Pull full page bleed 1/8" out from trim.

Minimum dot range for highlight areas is 5%. Avoid ICC pro-files. All traps are set at .144. Thin lines and or small lettering should be restricted to one color. Dot gain from file to final print could increase to approximately 20% (at a 50% dot.) No ICC color profiles.
  • Scanning: 4-color scans must be in EPS or TIFF format, 300 dpi, scanned as CMYK, not RGB. Halftone (grayscale) scans must be in EPS or TIFF format, 300 dpi, scanned as Halftones, not RGB.
