NEW ORLEANS New York City's PDT lounge was named the World's Best Cocktail Bar at the seventh annual Tales of the Cocktail's Spirit Awards on Saturday.

In addition, PDT's co-owner Jim Meehan picked up the title of American Bartender of the Year.

The Merchant Hotel in Belfast, Northern Ireland, won three different awards: World's Best Hotel Bar, World's Best Drink Selection and World's Best Cocktail Menu.

Other winners in the 13 different award categories included Brooklyn's Clover Club for World's Best New Cocktail Bar; New York's Pegu Club for Best American Cocktail Bar; and British mixologist Tony Conigliaro for International Bartender of the Year.

Peter Dorelli, who was manager for decades at the historic American Bar at The Savoy Hotel in London, received the Helen Davis Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual's impact on the cocktail community as well as their efforts in educating the public. Dorelli continues to work as an education officer with the United Kingdom Bartenders Guild.

Tales of the Cocktail's Spirit Awards honor the accomplishments of bars and bartenders from around the world, as well as those of writers, brand ambassadors and products.

Tales of the Cocktail is an annual event held in New Orleans, where bar professionals, enthusiasts, authors, chefs and others gather to share information in a variety of seminars and demonstrations. This year's Tales ran from July 8-12.
