NYC's Tavern on the Green plans San Francisco outpost

NEW YORK Tavern on the Green, the famed New York restaurant once owned by the late restaurant impresario Warner LeRoy, is planning to open a West Coast outpost in San Francisco.

The new Tavern on the Green will be located on the top floor of Metreon, the entertainment shopping mall that overlooks Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco’s main business and hospitality district. The restaurant’s interior will take up almost 30,000 square feet and will feature another 13,000 square feet of outdoor terrace space, which reportedly will make it the largest restaurant in San Francisco.

The menu will include local, fresh California ingredients and an extensive wine list drawn from the Napa Valley’s vineyards, said Michael Desiderio, Tavern on the Green’s chief operating officer.

Officials did not indicate when the new restaurant would open.

New York’s Tavern on the Green restaurant, which originally opened in 1934 and was acquired in 1974 by Warner LeRoy, is one of the highest-grossing independently owned restaurants in the United States, with nearly $40 million in annual revenues.
