Next up for the N.Y. Yankees: Restaurants

NEW YORK The New York Yankees are going into the restaurant business. Under an agreement announced Wednesday, team parent Yankee Global Enterprises has formed a new holding called YGE Steakhouses to develop a NYY Steak concept in collaboration with Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment, operator of the Hard Rock Cafe chain.

The prototype will be a 6,300-square-foot, year-round restaurant in the new Yankee Stadium, which is under construction in the Bronx. The 128-seat restaurant will be patterned after the Council Oak Steak & Seafood Restaurants currently in operation within the Seminole Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos in Tampa and Hollywood, Fla.

The partners expressed hopes of franchising the steakhouse brand in other parts of the country.

The new, $1.3 billion Yankee stadium, which is scheduled to open in time for next year’s baseball season, also will house a 7,000-square-foot Hard Rock Cafe operated by Seminole Hard Rock, the Yankees said. It, too, will operate year-round.

The baseball field will not be visible from inside the restaurants.

The Boston Red Sox, an archrival of the Yankees, disclosed plans last fall to extend its involvement in the restaurant business. The team said at the time that it intends to open establishments near its home park of Fenway Park.

The Broward County, Fla.-based Seminole Tribe bought the Hard Rock chain, based in Orlando, Fla., last year for $965 million. Today it operates seven casinos in Florida and owns 127 Hard Rock Cafes as well as 17 other hotels and casinos around the world. Aside from the Yankee stadium location, there are two other Hard Rock locations currently planned for Seattle and Dallas.
