New LA law intends to keep taco trucks on the move

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday made it a misdemeanor crime for mobile catering trucks to park in one place for more than an hour.

The law was adopted after restaurant owners in East Los Angeles complained that taco trucks were stealing their customers by parking nearby. In the past, mobile catering trucks were allowed to park in one place for up to 30 minutes. Violators were fined up to $60, but many just paid the tickets as the cost of doing business.

Under the new law, catering truck operators that don’t move after 60 minutes in a spot face penalties of up to $1,000, and/or six months in jail. According to the Los Angeles Times, taco truck operators vowed to ignore the new rules.
