Meaty alternative: Raccoon finds its way onto fund-raiser’s menu

HIBERNIA, IND. —After a four-year absence, raccoon was back on the menu at the Hibernia Community Building’s annual fund-raiser event here.

According to the Associated Press, hunters in the town bagged 103 raccoons for the dinner, which was prepared by 86-year-old LaVeran Lorenz, who has handled the fund-raiser’s raccoon-cooking duties since the early 1950s. Lorenz agreed to cook provided she wouldn’t have to clean the little critters, so Dina Woods, a neighbor, agreed to help. —After a four-year absence, raccoon was back on the menu at the Hibernia Community Building’s annual fund-raiser event here.

“It’s not like cleaning a chicken, I’ll tell you that,” Woods said. —After a four-year absence, raccoon was back on the menu at the Hibernia Community Building’s annual fund-raiser event here.

Turkey also was on the menu for those not wild or game about eating the, um, meat.
