McDonald’s plans to give away 8 million new chicken sandwiches

OAK BROOK Ill. McDonald’s said it plans to introduce its two Southern Style Chicken sandwiches by offering free samples of each on May 15 at all 14,000 of the chain’s U.S. locations.

The biscuit sandwich, a new breakfast option, will be given away between 7 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with the purchase of a medium or large beverage. The conventional sandwich version will be offered 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the same beverage-purchase requirement.

Both items feature a breaded and deep-fried white-meat chicken breast patty. The lunch and dinner sandwich features a steamed bun with two pickles.

The biscuit sandwich marks McDonald’s first offer of chicken for breakfast. Fried-chicken biscuit sandwiches are a familiar breakfast item in the South, and have been offered by regional chains such as Chick-fil-A and Hardee’s.

“With a unique blend of seasonings and ingredients that Southerners know and love, we’re confident that the new Southern Style Chicken Biscuit will change the way our customers think about chicken for breakfast,” said Neil Golden, McDonald’s USA senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

McDonald’s anticipates giving away 2 million biscuits and 6 million sandwiches on May 15, Golden said. The offer will be limited to one per customer, and hours may vary by restaurant.
