L.A. council endorses menu-labeling bill

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to ask Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign a recently passed state bill that would require restaurant chains with 15 or more California units to post nutrition data on menus and menu boards by July 1, 2009.

Unless Schwarzenegger vetoes the bill by Oct. 12, California will become the first state with such a law.

City council president Eric Garcetti said: "When I was a kid, Arnold Schwarzenegger inspired me to do my pull-ups. Now I'm asking him to pick up a pen and sign [the] bill. Informed consumers will be healthier eaters."

The legislation has been strongly opposed by the California Restaurant Association. The governor has not indicated his plans for the bill.
