Jack in the Box, Johnny Rockets go mini

SAN DIEGO The world of mini menu items got a bit more crowded this week with the Monday launch of Jack in the Box’s promised Mini Sirloin Burgers. The introduction followed the rollout last week of Johnny Rockets new Sliders, Mini Hot Dogs and Mini Chili Dogs.

Jack in the Box’s new mini burgers are served as a trio and topped with American cheese, grilled onions and ketchup on small buns similar to Hawaiian-style sweet rolls. The burgers are available for a suggested price of $3.89 at participating restaurants within the 2,170-unit chain.

The 260-unit Johnny Rockets chain, based in Lake Forest, Calif., debuted the new line of mini meals to “satisfy our guests’ cravings for small, sharable starters and, simultaneously, quench our operators’ desires to continually renew and refresh our brand,” said Lee Sanders, Johnny Rockets’ chief executive.

The sliders there come in five varieties, including the “traditional,” which features mayonnaise and pickle slices. The other four varieties include new sauces: ancho-chipotle; sweet pepper relish mayo; dijonnaise; and chunky bleu cheese.

Johnny Rockets’ Sliders, Mini Hot Dogs and Mini Chili Dogs are listed as appetizers and served in groups of three. Prices vary by location.

Several other quick-service chains have introduced or are considering the addition of mini-menu items. Burger King debuted its BK Burger Shots this year, for example, and McDonald’s is testing a new Snack Wrap Mac, a smaller version of its signature Big Mack served in a warm flour tortilla instead of a bun.
