Dunkin’ Donuts to expand into China

CANTON Mass. Dunkin’ Donuts said on Friday it expects to open its first shop in Shanghai this spring, which will mark the chain’s debut in mainland China.

Dunkin' Donuts said 100 shops over 10 years are planned for Shanghai and the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu and Zhijiang. The company recently granted franchise rights for those areas to Mercuries & Associates, which also is a franchise partner for Taiwan. Mercuries currently operates 10 Dunkin' Donuts units in Taiwan after opening its first store there in January 2007. Another 10 units are planned for Taiwan in 2008, Dunkin' said.

Dunkin' said the mainland China units would offer coffee, espresso, teas, frozen drinks and a variety of doughnuts and other baked goods. In addition to Dunkin's traditional menu offerings, the China units will feature items that appeal to local tastes, such as honeydew melon doughnuts and mochi rings.

Dunkin' Donuts is a division of Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin' Brands Inc., which also owns the Baskin-Robbins brand.
