Chevys, California Tortilla debut bowl meals

CYPRESS Calif. Both Chevys Fresh Mex and California Tortilla on Tuesday joined the growing number of chains introducing rice-based menu options with the debut of new meals in bowls.

At Chevys, the new Fresh Mex Lunch Bowls are positioned as part of the Cypress, Calif.-based chain’s “everyday value” meals. Five made-from-scratch and cooked-to-order options are available, including the Chile Verde Bowl, the Smothered Chile Verde Burrito Bowl, the Chicken Mole Enchilada Bowl, the Red Chile Pork Taquito Bowl and the Grilled Fresh Salmon Bowl.

Recommended prices start at $7.99, and the bowls are available at participating restaurants within the 68-unit chain Monday through Friday until 3 p.m. The limited-time offer is scheduled to be available through Aug. 10.

California Tortilla, a 40-unit chain based in Rockville, Md., has added a new Teriyaki Burrito and Bowl to its second-quarter limited-time-offer lineup.

Scheduled to roll out Wednesday, the Teriyaki Burrito is filled with grilled, marinated chicken, teriyaki sauce, grilled pineapple salsa, Mexican rice, crunchy noodles, scallions and lettuce. Like most of the chain’s burritos, guests can also request that it be served in a bowl, rather than wrapped in a tortilla.

Jack in the Box has had success with the return of a Teriyaki Bowl menu item as a lower-in-cost nonhamburger alternative last October, and chains such as Popeye’s and El Pollo Loco added rice bowl offerings last fall.
