Calif. city to ban polystyrene containers

SAN BRUNO Calif. The city council here last week approved a measure that would ban the use of polystyrene, or Styrofoam, products in restaurants, despite opposition from operators who said it would make it difficult and more costly to offer takeout.

The ban, which is scheduled to go into effect April 2010, was approved by a vote of 4 to 1. Following protests from restaurant operators, however, lawmakers agreed to revisit the rule before it is enacted in order to ensure a suitable eco-friendly alternative is available.

Once the ban is enforced, violators will be fined between $100 and $500 for repeat offenses within a one-year period.
