Boston Market turns to hybrid satellite-land-wireless network

News

GOLDEN Colo. Boston Market Corp., based here, has contracted with Spacenet Inc. to upgrade the 500-unit, fast-casual chicken chain’s existing satellite data network to a hybrid system supporting better application performance and enhanced security, the vendor said.

Spacenet said it is upgrading Boston Market to the SkyEdge VSAT platform combining DSL, cable and wireless broadband data networking technologies to support web-based restaurant and back-office applications and satellite data capabilities for network backup and multicasting applications, including software distribution. McLean, Va.-based Spacenet added that the hybrid network also supports fast credit and debit card authorization and POS polling and is augmented by Spacenet Prysm, a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards-compliant networking platform that is also part of the Boston Market package.

Gregg Flannery, Boston Market director of systems operations, said the SkyEdge approach “supports all of our communication requirements on a single platform and provides a reliable Wide Area Network for our restaurant applications.” During a pilot test, he said, “we experienced noticeable [application] performance improvements” that, if replicated across the system, “will enable store managers to get their back-office work done more quickly so they can ultimately concentrate on running the restaurant and serving customers.”
